Can You Drink Alcohol With Antibiotics? Can You Drink Alcohol With Antibiotics?

alcohol and co amoxiclav

When people start taking antibiotics they often ask can you alcohol and co amoxiclav  with it? The answer, as it turns out, is a cautious yes. However, it depends on the type of medication being taken. Some have specific warnings and others can cause a reaction if mixed with certain types of drinks. In this article we look at a few different antibiotics and which ones you can and cannot consume alcohol with.

One of the most common antibiotics is co amoxiclav, better known as Augmentin. It is used to treat a wide range of infections and is safe for most patients to take in moderate doses. The Amoxicillin part of the medicine works by interfering with the ability of bacteria to form cell walls, which kills the bacteria that are causing the infection. The clavulanic acid part of the medicine stops bacteria from breaking down amoxicillin, which allows the drug to work more effectively.

There are a number of side effects associated with co amoxiclav, including diarrhoea and feeling sick. If these symptoms are severe and persistent, then you should see a doctor as they may be caused by a serious bowel condition called necrotising enterocolitis. Co amoxiclav can also cause a dark staining of the teeth, but this is not permanent and brushing your teeth should remove it. Drinking large amounts of alcohol could make the medicine less effective, so you should avoid it if possible.

There are some antibiotics that you should never mix with alcohol, such as metronidazole (Flagyl), tinidazole (Gabadal) and linezolid (Zyvox). These medications can react badly with alcohol and cause unpleasant or even dangerous side effects.
